By: Caleb Lee

In layman?s words, gynecomastia is a physiological disorder where male breasts get enlarged abnormally. This happens when then the mammary glands develop often causing secretion of milk. This can happen in any age group, from the infants to grown up adults. Nowadays, this is a very common disorder and there are researches and studies going on to understand other reasons behind it.

The main causes of Gynecomastia still remain uncertain but according to medical experts it results due to the imbalance of the sex tissue or hormones in men. To be more specific with the causes of this problem it is important to say that it arises as a result of the disproportion in the levels of estrogen and testosterone in the male body. This imbalance is one of the basic causes of these problems.

As a result of this imbalance, fats get deposited in a particular area of a male body. Due to this cause an individual?s breast gets larger. This problem generally arises among people who are overweight.

Testosterone is the hormone which transforms a young boy approaching his teens or adolescence to a grown up man. If the desired count of hormones is not attained or crosses its higher limit in that case some side effects crop up. Gynecomastia is one such result of the imbalance. Apart from this, there are many causes. It has been studied that prolonged medication for treatment of some chronic diseases often results into gynecomastia.

It is becoming very common everyday. Various surveys are done to study the rate of people falling prey to it. One such survey states that in 10-20% cases, it has been seen that the reason behind gynecomastia is the intake of medicines like omeprazole, cimetidine, antipsychotics, finasteride etc. If a person is suffering from prostate gland cancer, there is an enhanced possibility of gynecomastia as the drugs meant to cure it like GnRH analogs often trigger it.

Not just that, there are many other reasons pertaining to our body that may cause gynecomastia. As for example, if due to any reasons, hypothalamus or pituitary gland do not perform well, the testosterone count falls. This is a common and grave concern of male body. However, it should be remembered that whatever reason could be there, the treatment depends on the person.

The doctor will try to determine the cause of the problem before deciding the line of treatment to be followed. The treatment may be in the form of exercises, dietary changes or hormone treatments, and even surgery as a last resort.

An individual can discuss with his doctor about the different options available for overcoming this problem effectively. Gynexin alpha formula, tomoxifen, clomiphene and ultimate gynemax are some of the common medicines that are prescribed by physician in order to help patients in getting rid of this ailment. In addition there are other gynecomastia supplements that help in reducing male boobs.

Besides, there are some cases where patients are left with the last option that is to opt for surgery. Some of the common surgical techniques are reduction mammoplasty, gland excision, liposuction and at times a combination of all these techniques. Thus, it is better to consult a qualified physician to cure this ailment that comes as an embarrassment for men.
