Experience the Best of Italy at These Top Hotels

By: Tess Kirkpatrick

Italy is a place where you could spend a year, exploring every day, and still not scratch the surface of all the things to do and see. From Tuscany to Rome to Florence to Venice and all spots in between, you'll find some of the world's finest art, architecture, food and scenery.
Falling in love with Italy is easy; narrowing down your travel choices is the challenge. Designing a creative itinerary (keeping in mind the amount of time you have and what you wish to see) is an excellent approach. If you want to hit as many hot spots as possible, plan a highlight tour by car or rail and head from Milan down south through Florence and Rome and on to Naples and Capri. Another option is to spend your vacation days exploring romantic Tuscany, or perhaps you long for a visit to Sicily. A visit to Umbria and the Sabine Hills is unique trip option, off the beaten path.
Expert travel writer Karen Brown has created several special itineraries for travelers to Italy, allowing them to truly experience all the fun of this vast country. She also describes some of the best places to stay, and the following hotels are all recent winners of the Karen Brown Readers' Choice Awards:
Locanda dell-Amorosa, chosen by Karen Brown readers as Italy's "Most Romantic" lodging, is in an ideal spot for those wishing to travel around Tuscany and Umbria. The historic hotel is part of a larger complex that once formed a small town. The stables have been transformed into a restaurant, the main house now offers more than two dozen guest rooms, and each one has been individually decorated. The rooms boast views of the vineyards and surrounding valleys, and they feature antiques and rustic wood-beamed ceilings.
Il Falconiere Relais, just a few kilometers outside of Cortona, is yet another Tuscan gem. The hotel, the recipient of the Karen Brown Readers' Choice Award for Italy's "Warmest Welcome," offers an assortment of beautifully appointed, romantic guest rooms and suites. The setting at this hotel is amazing, from the views of the surrounding countryside to the ambiance of the dining room.
Albergo Villa Belvedere is proof that you can eat your cake and have it too. This beautiful villa was chosen by Karen Brown readers as Italy's "Greatest Value." While not luxurious, the guest rooms are clean and comfortable with simple furnishings, and some have pleasant views of Lake Como. Breakfast and dinner, both filled with hearty fare, are included in the rates, adding to the value of this lakeside retreat. The Cappelletti Family and their warm hospitality are another huge plus, and you'll be treated more as a friend than a hotel guest.
With the Amalfi coastline as its backdrop, there are few more scenic spots than Il San Pietro di Positano. This family-run hotel is among the world's most beautiful, so it's easy to understand why Karen Brown readers have named it the greatest "Splendid Splurge" in Italy. Amenities include a private beach cove, swimming pool and tennis courts. There is a fitness center and full-service spa, a gourmet restaurant with an extensive wine selection.
