Enjoy the Holidays at a Virginia Bed and Breakfast

By: Jane Leisteiner.

Virginia, with its myriad of historic attractions and splendid scenery, is an ideal spot for an old-fashioned country Christmas. There are plenty of interesting seasonal events, and some excellent bed and breakfasts, where you can truly savor the spirit of Christmas.
If you enjoy history, plan your holiday stay in Orange, Virginia. Much of this quaint, historic village is located in the National Register of Historic Places. The town is also within easy driving distance to four presidential homes, several of which offer Christmas and holiday events.
Celebrate the season the Presidential way with a trip to Mount Vernon. During the month of December, visitors can enjoy the Mount Vernon by Candlelight event. The three-hour evening program includes a candlelit tour, fireside Christmas caroling, hot cider and treats. It is a unique way to enjoy the home of George and Martha Washington -- the only time of year when the estate is open at night.
Another local attraction is Thomas Jefferson's Monticello, which has its own evening holiday event. The program, which details the holiday season during Jefferson's time, includes a tour of the main floor of the home, as well as the third-floor dome room. At James Monroe's home, Ash Lawn-Highland, there are several holiday events. There are two concerts, gingerbread and lace ornament workshops, and, of course, the home decorated for the holiday season.
The Holladay House bed and breakfast, a beautifully restored bed and breakfast located right on Orange's Main Street, is a perfect spot from which to enjoy all your holiday fun. This Virginia inn is part of the town's historic commercial district which is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. The home's 19th-century charm is enhanced with period decor and antiques.
Each of the guest rooms has been decorated individually to capture a different theme. The Garden Room is a perfect spot for romance with its in-room double whirlpool tub and private patio. The Victorian Suite is another posh option and includes a four-poster bed and fireplace. The other rooms are equally delightful, and all guests enjoy luxurious linens, fluffy towels and fine bath products. Guests also are treated to a full, gourmet breakfast and homemade baked goods, coffee and tea are available throughout the day. The innkeepers at this Virginia bed and breakfast can arrange for anything from Civil War tours to hot-air balloon rides to in-room massage services.
