12 Step Programs - Where Did They Come From?

By: Dave Turo-Shields, LCSW, CEC

12 Step Programs come in all shapes and sizes now-a-days. You can receive tremendous help for a variety of addictions, and at zero cost. Yes, they're free to attend. The 12 Step Model is an easy one to understand, though it can be very challenging to follow the steps. Those that do almost all experience freedom from their addiction.

Alcoholics Anonymous is where it all began back in the 1930s. Two men by the name of Bill and Bob came together in their suffering and pieced together a protocol they were able to follow for addiction recovery success.

The early beginnings of the AA 12 step program had it's roots in Christianity. That's right. Most individuals involved in these addiction recovery groups today don't know this simple truth. And it may be for the better. In fact, each of the 12 steps can be traced to specific Bible passages.

The Oxford Group philosophy included powerful challenges for individuals to completely surrender their affliction to God. Once done, the next steps included a historical analysis of how the alcoholic's behavior negatively influenced others. From there this information is shared with a trusted person in order to clean oneself spiritually. The approach also included identifying negative personal character traits and turning these over to God as well. The program rounds out as the alcoholic goes about making amends directly, when possible, to heal old wounds caused by alcoholism. The nice finishing touch involves taking what the alcoholic has learned and paying it forward to others in need.

Today most refer to their 12 step experience as spiritual, not religious. This has great appeal and skirts around peoples resistance to religious rituals.

The success of the 12 steps speak itself. Today, all over the world, you can find programs focused on codependency, gambling, sex addiction, spending, overeating and many more than I could list here. This program is free to attend. Is confidential and it's worked for hundreds of thousands to recover from thier addictions.
